How everything works

A D&D 5E toolkit for players and Dungeon Masters: look up the rules, build characters, run your campaigns and fight battles in the browser.

Start here

I want to play

  1. 1 Make a character
  2. 2 Take them into battle
  3. 3 Join a friend’s campaign from their invite link

I want to look something up

  1. 1 Press Ctrl K to search
  2. 2 Browse the spells
  3. 3 Browse the monsters

Nothing matches “”. Try another word, or press Ctrl K to search the compendium.

Getting started

You can read, roll and try out every tool without an account. Sign up when you want to keep what you make.

Sign up with an email address, or continue with Google or Discord. An account saves your characters, campaigns, encounters, favourites and homebrew.

  • Change your name, email, password and avatar under Profile.
  • Your Great Hall (the dashboard) gathers your heroes and recent activity in one place.

Press Ctrl K, or the magnifying glass at the top, to search spells, monsters, items and rules from any page.

  • The full search page can save entries to your Favourites.

The dice tray

The dice button in the bottom-left corner rolls any die, with advantage or disadvantage, or a formula like 2d6+3. It keeps a history of your rolls.

Light or dark

The sun and moon button switches between the Midnight (dark) and Parchment (light) themes. Your choice is remembered.

The setting menu at the top switches the compendium between worlds, such as classic fantasy, cyberpunk, superhero and space opera.

What has changed on the site, newest first.

The compendium

The rules of the game, from the System Reference Document 5.2, searchable and cross-linked.

Every spell from cantrips to 9th level. Filter by level, school and class.

Full stat blocks with lore. Filter by challenge rating and type.

Class features level by level, with subclasses.

Talents and boons, with what you need to take them.

How the game works: core rules, conditions, damage types and languages.

The history and places of each world.

Favourites

Needs an account

Entries you have saved from search, ready to open again at the table.

Making characters

Four ways to make a hero, from careful to instant. You can build without an account and sign in when you save.

Build a character one step at a time, with the rules explained as you go.

  • Nine steps: species, class, background, ability scores, skills, spells, features, details and a final review.
  • Ability scores can use the standard array, point buy, rolled dice or numbers you type in.
  • Characters start private. Tick Public on the details step to share yours.

A ready-to-play character at any level in one go. Ability score increases go to your class’s main ability.

Answer six questions to find the class you were born to play, then keep the result.

Draw three cards for your past, present and future, and let them pick your class. You can turn the reading into a character.

Your character sheet

Open a character from My Characters to play them. The sheet keeps track for you during a session.

Hit points and status

Needs an account

Track hit points, temporary hit points, death saves, conditions, exhaustion and inspiration.

Spells

Needs an account

Prepare spells, cast them to spend a slot, and keep track of concentration.

Rests and resources

Needs an account

Use and restore class resources like Rage or Ki. Short and long rests restore what they should, and you can spend Hit Dice.

Add experience points. When you have enough, Level Up walks you through the new level, and you can undo it.

  • Add levels in a second class to multiclass.

Bastion

Needs an account

From level 5, build a bastion: add facilities, give them orders and advance bastion turns.

Print and share

Needs an account

Print a clean sheet for the table, or make the character public and share the link.

Take into battle

Needs an account

Send the character straight into a Tabletop Tactics fight at their own level.

Running a game

Tools for Dungeon Masters, before the session and at the table.

Campaigns

Needs an account

Run a campaign with your group. Players join with their own characters.

  • Send an invite link to bring players in.
  • Log each session with its notes.
  • Shared dice: rolls made in the campaign are seen by everyone in it.
  • Upload maps and move tokens on them.
  • Write down your house rules.

Encounters

Needs an account

Build a group of monsters and see how hard the fight is. Add the party, roll initiative and step through the turns.

Run a ready-made module, or write your own, from one page: the plot, NPCs, locations, handouts and the fights along the way.

  • Reveal handouts to your players when the moment comes.
  • Writing or running your own adventure needs an account.

Arrange your own screen from panels and it is remembered in this browser.

  • Panels: quick rules and conditions, monster stat blocks, spells, an initiative tracker, a dice roller, notes, a map viewer and background sounds.
  • Generators for random NPC names, treasure and weather.

Give a monster levels in a character class and get a new challenge rating, using the 2014 Dungeon Master’s Guide method. Sign in to save the result to your homebrew.

A five-card Tarokka reading in the style of Curse of Strahd, with a link to share it.

Tabletop Tactics

Turn-based D&D battles against the computer, played in your browser on a miniature battle mat.

Story campaigns of linked battles, with treasure, camp and level-ups between them. Play the built-in ones or adventures made by other players.

  • Pick Story, Heroic or Deadly difficulty.
  • Campaign progress is saved in this browser, not your account.

One battle on your terms: choose the map, the party and the monsters.

Your saved characters fight at their own level with their own spells and gear, alongside twelve ready-made heroes.

Share a table link and each friend takes a seat with their own character. The host can take over the monsters as Game Master.

Session Zero is a five-minute tutorial battle. Press ? during a battle for how to play.

Paint a battlefield, place the party and the monsters, and add treasure, barrels and reinforcements. Anyone can try it; sign in to save.

Build a campaign

Needs an account

Put your scenes in order and write an opening and an ending.

Your workshop

Needs an account

Everything you have built, where each piece stands, and buttons to test, submit or withdraw it.

  • Only you can play your work until you submit it and an admin approves it.
  • If an admin sends it back, their note appears here.
  • Changing something already live sends it back for another look.

Approved campaigns and battles from the community, ready to play or remix.

Worlds and homebrew

Other settings, and content you make yourself.

Each setting has its own hub with lore, ready-made heroes, notable NPCs and its own compendium. Opening one switches the site to that setting.

Write your own spells, monsters, feats, magic items, weapons and notes. Keep them private or share them, and browse what others shared.

  • Export your homebrew to a file and import it again later. Making and importing needs an account.

Your data

What you make is yours.

Download your data

Needs an account

Under Profile, download your characters, the campaigns you run, encounters, favourites and homebrew as a JSON file.

  • Import puts characters from an export back into your account.

Privacy

Characters, homebrew and Tactics scenes stay private until you choose to share them.

Delete your account

Needs an account

You can delete your account and everything in it from the bottom of the Profile page.

Discord and the API

The compendium outside the website.

Discord bot

Where the site’s bot is installed, /dnd looks up a spell, monster, item or rule, and /suggest-character rolls up a character idea.

Public API

For developers: read-only JSON at /api/v1/spells, /api/v1/monsters and /api/v1/search, and /api/v1/characters/{id} for public characters.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Every page and tool is free to use, with or without an account.

Do I need an account?

Only to save things: characters, campaigns, encounters, favourites, homebrew and Tactics scenes. Reading, searching, rolling and trying the builders all work without one.

Which rules does the site use?

The System Reference Document 5.2, the free version of the 2024 rules, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Monsters with Classes works out challenge ratings with the 2014 Dungeon Master’s Guide method.

Who can see my character?

Only you, until you mark it Public. Then it appears in Community characters, and anyone with the link can view it.

I built a Tactics scene. Why can’t my friends find it?

Scenes and campaigns are checked by an admin before anyone else can play them. Submit it from your workshop. You can test play it yourself at any time while you wait.

My Tactics campaign progress has gone.

Campaign progress is kept in the browser you played in. Another browser, another device or clearing site data starts afresh. Your characters and anything you built are saved in your account.

How do I level up?

Add experience on the character sheet. When you have enough, a Level Up button appears and walks you through the new level.

How do I get my data out?

Profile, then Download export. You get a JSON file of your characters, campaigns, encounters, favourites and homebrew.
